What is acne and how can I fight it?

What is acne?

The simplest explanation is that acne is an infection of hair follicles in the skin that become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells. The condition is primarily driven by excess sebum, a natural oil produced by the body. Areas most commonly affected by acne are those with the most sebaceous glands, such as your face, forehead, chest and upper back. Our skin needs sebum for protection and hydration; however, excess sebum production creates a perfect environment for a skin bacterium called Cutibacterium acnes. When there is an overgrowth of this bacteria, the skin becomes inflamed, stimulating the production of more sebum as a protective mechanism. This results in acne, creating a vicious cycle.

Why teenagers are most affected?

Puberty and hormonal changes are the main reasons why teenagers experience more acne.  Hormones such as androgens, which increase during adolescence, intensify sebum production. These hormones bind to receptors in the sebaceous glands, which then enlarge and produce more sebum.

What can you do?

There are several things you can do to fight acne.

  • Check the ingredients of your skin care products to make sure they do not contain comedogenic ingredients. These are the ingredients that cause acne.

  • Take a probiotic and reduce your intake of fatty foods. You can find out more about acne and probiotics here.

  • Wash your sheets and pillowcase as often as possible to prevent re-infection. In severe cases, we recommend using a fresh pillowcase each day.

  • Try not to double-dip into your cosmetics and wash your makeup brushes often to avoid contaminating them.

What can we do for you?

N E R I N E Moisturiser for Acne combats acne in two ways – by fighting bacteria and by reducing inflammation.

Our formulation contains natural antibacterial components (Azelaic Acid, Benzalkonium Chloride) which eliminate the bacteria. The inflammation caused by the bacteria is controlled by natural anti-inflammatory compounds (Aloe Vera, Ginkgo Biloba, Boswellia Serrata Extract, Reishi Mushroom Extract). The gel-based formulation is rich in vitamins and nutrients (Vitamins A, C and E) that help your skin heal without scarring.

Unlike most anti-acne treatments that are harsh and drying to the skin, our formulation increases skin hydration (Glycereth-26, Aloe Vera). Because irritation can increase sebum production, our moisturiser has been specifically designed not only to treat acne but also to soothe your skin.
